Today we shall discuss important reasoning topic classification. The classification is a process of dividing various objects into groups on the basis of the properties common to them. The classification helps us to make a homogeneous group from the given heterogeneous groups.

Classification means 'to assort the items' of a given group on the basis of a certain common quality they possess and then spot the stranger 'odd one out'. These questions are based on words 'letters and numerals. In these types of problems, we consider the defining quality of particular things. In these questions, four or five elements or parts are given, out of which one does not belong to the group. You are required to find the 'odd one'.

There are four types of questions based on classification which we shall consider here.

            Types of Questions :

  • Choosing the odd word
  • Choosing the odd pair of words
  • Choosing the odd number/pair of number
  • Choosing the odd letter group.

Type I. Choosing the odd word -

In this type of problems, some words are given which belong to real word. They have some common features except the odd one. You are required to find the 'odd one out'.

            Example :

            (A) Scientist          (B) Engineer             (C) Architect         (D) Teacher        (E) Doctor

Solution : (D) Teacher - All the rest are exclusive professions while a teacher may, be there in any of these categories.

Type II. Choosing the odd pair of the words -

In this type of classification, different pairs are classified on the basis of some common features/properties like names, places, uses, situations, origin, etc.

            Example : Beautiful : Ugly : : ?

            (A) Hard : Rough  (B) Long : Last        (C) High : Climb   (D) Pointed : Blunt

Solution : (D) - As 'Beautiful' is the opposite of 'Ugly', similarly 'Pointed' is the opposite of 'Blunt'.

Type III. Choosing the odd Number/Pair of Numbers -

In this type of classification, certain number, pair of numbers are given, out of which except one, all have some common characteristics and hence are alike. The 'different one' is to be chosen as the answer.

            Example :

            (A) 79                    (B) 88                       (C) 97                    (D) 87

            Solution :

            79 → 7 + 9 → 16

            88 → 8 + 8 → 16

            97 → 9 + 7 → 16

            87 → 8 + 7 → 15

Type IV. Choosing the odd letter group -

In these type of questions, some group of letters are given. One out of them is different and this is to be chosen by the candidate as the answer.

            Example :

            (A) H                     (B) P                         (C) Z                     (D) S

            Ans. : (D)

Solution : (D) - All other letters except, (D) Occupy the even - numbered positions in the English alphabets.

            Example :

            (A) PQRS             (B) MNOP               (C) BCDE             (D) STVU

            Ans. (D)

Solution : 'STVU' is not in a correct sequence.
