Word formation tips and tricks

Types of questions:-

Type 1:- WORD FORMATION  USING  LETTERS  FROM  A  GIVEN  WORD

In this type, three subtypes of questions are asked generally.

First, a word has been given, followed by four other words, one of which can or cannot be formed by using the main word.

Second a word has been given and candidates are asked to make new meaningful words using letters like 1st, 3rd, 5th, 8th, etc…. of the given word.

Third , a word has been given and candidates are asked to form as many meaningful English words as possible from the given word, using each letter only once in each word.

Example:-

1. Arrange the words given below in a meaningful sequence.

1. Income    2. Status     3. Education     4. Well-being      5. Job       

(A) 3, 1, 5, 2, 4             (B) 1, 3, 2, 5, 4 

(C) 1, 2, 5, 3, 4             (D) 3, 5, 1, 2, 4

Answer: Option D

Explanation:

The correct order is :

Arrange the words given below in a meaningful sequence.

1. Elephant     2. Cat      3. Mosquito     4. Tiger      5. Whale          

(A) 5, 3, 1, 2, 4             (B) 3, 2, 4, 1, 5

(C) 1, 3, 5, 4, 2             (D) 2, 5, 1, 4, 3

Answer: Option B

Explanation:

The correct order is :

Example:-

In the following question, jumbled letters of a meaningful word are given. You are required to rearrange these letters and select from the given alternative, the word which is almost similar in meaning to the rearranged word.

(A) INCREASE             (B) REDUCE

(C) STILL                     (D) DECREASE

Explanation :-

The same after meaning of the given 'Increase' because after rearrangement given word is 'EXPAND'

Questions on Word Formation:

These questions are very common in various competitive exams such as SSC, NDA, CDS, LIC, RRB, Bank Exams etc. In each of the following questions, find which one word cannot be made from the letters of the given word.
